This entry contains my Critical Analysis of an Equity Plan for SDAD 5800: Higher Education Law completed in Spring Quarter 2021. This artifact allowed me to analyze an institution’s current 5-year equity plan from the perspective of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion consultant and offer them a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat) analysis to help them understand the implications of their current plan and their potential for meaningful growth.
This entry demonstrates my understanding of DEI issues in higher education, how these issues were created and continue to be maintained in higher education’s current structures, and how I have grown to become a more cognizant and proactive student affairs professional. Writing this paper allowed me to increase my knowledge of student issues and how I can recognize and interrogate the systemic issues oppressing minoritized student communities. Lastly, this entry is a particular point of pride: after receiving helpful feedback in the preceding assignment, I submitted for this course, I took the feedback to heart and made the extra effort to apply it which strengthened my analytical writing for this assignment.
Learning outcomes addressed
LOs addressed include connecting and synthesizing various readings and research (LO 7: Utilizing assessment, evaluation, technology, and research to improve practice) to help develop a stronger understanding of DEI issues throughout the history of higher education (LO 1: Understanding the foundations and emerging nature of the Student Affairs profession and higher education); its impact on minoritized students, staff, and faculty today (LO 2: Understanding students and student issues) and my call to integrate more critical and intentional antiracist practices and actions as a professional (LO 4: Understanding and fostering diversity, justice and a sustainable world formed by a global perspective and Jesuit Catholic tradition); (LO 10: Establishing and enhancing professional identity).
