This entry contains my Final Philosophy Statement for SDAD 5400: Student Development Theory and Research completed in Winter Quarter 2020. This artifact allowed me to develop a written philosophy of how I use student development theories in student affairs work. I was able to reflect on the purpose of education, my values as an educator, how theory can inform practice, and identify theories that align and connect with my values as an educator.
This entry demonstrates my knowledge and increased familiarity with various research and student theories and how these theories can be applied to various student groups, communities, and identities. This artifact allowed me to reflect on my personal and professional experiences and identify how student theory may have played a role in those experiences. In creating this artifact, I was able to think critically and write about how theory can be used as a tool to enhance my understanding of diverse student experiences. I also reflect on ways to adapt my role to support students in their development and contribute to an overall welcoming and inclusive space.
Learning Outcomes addressed
Utilizing scholarly research and learning about development theories (LO 7: Utilizing assessment, evaluation, technology, and research to improve practice) helped me understand college students from various identities and experiences in post-secondary education (LO 2: Understanding students and student issues). This entry addresses how I can use theory to acknowledge and recognize how students develop in order to build welcoming and inclusive spaces and services (LO 5: Adapting student services to specific environments and cultures), provide me an opportunity to reflect on my personal and professional values (LO 10: Establishing and enhancing professional identity), and articulate how both intersect in my current and future practice (LO 8: Communicating effectively in speech and in writing).
