This entry contains my professional development project for SDAD 5800: Higher Education Law completed in Winter Quarter 2021. For my fourth assignment I had the opportunity to select a project that was meaningful and relevant to my professional needs. This artifact summarizes how the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) guides and influences the day-to-day of an academic adviser within University of Washington’s Humanities Academic Services. At the time, I was new to my role, and I wanted to do a deep dive into a law woven into the fabric of my full-time student affairs role.
This entry demonstrates my ability to research, synthesize, and write information about laws and regulations that impact higher education as well as how they affect the students the institutions serve. Specifically, FERPA protects the privacy and educational records of students; in a world that is increasingly relying on storing data electronically and in data clouds, I learned how this law connects to my work, influences job duties to become a more ethical and aware educator, and helps me to anticipate student and governance issues that may arise.
Learning outcomes addressed
This artifact addresses the relationship between students and institutions and the impact of law development (LO 9: Understanding issues surrounding law, policy, finance and governance). As a result, this primes me to be able to address issues affecting students created by laws, policies, and procedures (LO 3: Exhibiting professional integrity and ethical leadership in professional practice). This entry also allowed me to practice legal research (LO 7: Utilizing assessment, evaluation, technology, and research to improve practice) and articulate my understanding in a succinct writing assignment (LO 8: Communicating effectively in speech and in writing). Lastly, this addresses and informs my professional identity based on the functional area, institution, and community I am integrated in (LO 10: Establishing and enhancing professional identity).
