This entry contains a presentation created with my colleague, for our team at University of Washington Humanities Academic Services that contains highlighted information from student focus groups we conducted to learn directly from students what we as a center, as well as UW in general, are doing well, could improve on, as well as identify actions and opportunities to create a more positive advising service and experience for students. In our inaugural year as a center, our goal was to assess our services, resources, communication, and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
This entry demonstrates how I can build a framework to recruit volunteers, to facilitate discussions, and to examine and present findings. This important data collection gave our team a holistic snapshot of our professional work, including increasing our understanding of the issues our students are dealing with. From this presentation, I’ve learned how powerful and valuable data and research can be to inform and improve my practice, and I’ve also developed a greater appreciation for the effort it takes to gather critical information.
Learning outcomes addressed
This project required me to collaborate with a colleague from the brainstorm stage through applying the results to our work (LO 6: Developing and demonstrating skills in leadership and collaboration) and also allowed me to strengthen my communication skills through facilitating discussions and presenting the findings (LO 8: Communicating effectively in speech and in writing). By collecting and analyzing qualitative data (LO 7: Utilizing assessment, evaluation, technology, and research to improve practice) I was able to recognize current student trends and challenges (LO 2: Understanding students and student issues) to improve and adapt practices as an academic services unit as well as in my individual advising role (LO 5: Adapting student services to specific environments and cultures).
