This entry contains a Professional Letter of Promise written by John Charlton, Director of Humanities Academic Services (HAS) at University of Washington, my direct supervisor since June 2020. This entry was developed in SDAD 5900: Capstone Seminar in Winter Quarter 2022 and describes my professional development and contributions as an academic adviser to our students, our team, and the UW community.
This entry demonstrates my ability to learn complex departmental and university policies, develop meaningful relationships with campus partners, create resources and procedures for supporting student success, and my contribution to building a new academic services center and initiative at the University of Washington.
Learning outcomes addressed
This letter addresses how I have grown as an adviser since joining HAS in being able to support students (LO 2: Understanding students and student issues) through effective communication of policies and procedures (LO 9: Understanding issues surrounding law, policy, finance and governance) in advising appointments and emails (LO 8: Communicating effectively in speech and in writing). This entry also illustrates how I have cultivated partnerships with staff and faculty across campus (LO 6: Developing and demonstrating skills in leadership and collaboration), developed methods of collecting meaningful data (LO 7: Utilizing assessment, evaluation, technology, and research to improve practice) to create impactful services, specifically for humanities student during remote and hybrid learning environments (LO 5: Adapting student services to specific environments and cultures). My director also speaks to my integrity and leadership (LO 3: Exhibiting professional integrity and ethical leadership in professional practice) and my promise as an emerging leader in the student affairs and higher education space (LO 10: Establishing and enhancing professional identity).
